Jabez Jones was born January 1, 1833 in Shropshire, England, to Richard and Mary Jones. The family came to America and settled in Waukesha County sometime prior to 1860. Jabez married Margaretta Brewer, and had one son, Fred, who was born August 16, 1862, just about the exact time Jabez enlisted in Company B of the 28th Wisconsin.

Pvt. Jones died August 18, 1864 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas and was buried there. After the war, burials were moved to the National Cemetery in Little Rock, where he is now interred in Section 4. A stone marker for Jabez and brother Obadiah, who served with the Iron Brigade, is located in the Ottawa Town Cemetery, in Dousman, Waukesha County, Wis. The parents of Jabez and Obadiah are also buried in the same cemetery.

Information and photos contributed by Carrie Bohn, a descendant of Jabez's sister, Ann (Jones) Davis.
