Johann NettesheimJohann Joseph Nettesheim was born 7 Sept 1842, the son of Reiner & Anna Sophia (Fuss) Nettesheim.

He enlisted as a Corporal in Company H of the 28th Wisconsin Infantry on 21 August 1862. He was a resident of Brookfield, Wis. at the time of his enlistment. Military records he was single, had blue eyes, a light colored hair and complextion light. He was 5'8" and of stocky build. In the records his surname is spelled "Natishheim."

After a very bad winter at Helena, Arkansas, Corporal Joseph Nettesheim came down with Typhoid Malaria fever, as so many others did, and died May 23, 1863. He was first buried near Helena and after the war his body was moved to the Memphis National Cemetery. His remains are interred in Grave 3224, Section C.

It is said he was engaged to Helena Schmitz before the war. Helena never married.
